County statistics show children as young as 12 years old turning to heroin due to being addicted to painkillers they discovered in the family medicine cabinet.

Middlesex County had the largest increase of overdose deaths in New Jersey in 2014, this hasn’t slowed down over the last few years. First responders are finding themselves being summoned to attend to more and more overdoses every year. In 2017 first responders administered Narcan 443 times, this was up from 296 times the year before. Although the amount of Narcan available is making it easier to save lives from overdose, the number of opioid users seems to keep growing as do the overdoses that are being caused by new and more powerful ingredients found in street drugs. With the introduction of fentanyl and carfentanil, two synthetic forms of opioids that are at least 50% more powerful than morphine, the overdose rate has increased at an alarming rate.
